Patient Presentation with low back pain

81-year-old, Male. Chronic low back pain for over five years. Pain originates at his low back at the site of a prior surgery (fusion of lumbar vertebrae with a truss of metal screws, bolts, and rods for vertebral stability) and radiates down the posterior region of both legs. At his initial consultation with me, he was regularly taking nine medications (multiple pain medications and hypertension medication).

Current Symptoms

Low back pain radiating down the posterior region of both legs.

Acupuncture 1,2,3

Step 1:

  • Foot Tai Yang (UB)

Step 2:

  • Foot Taiyang (UB), Foot Shaoyin (KD)

Step 3:

  • Right: KD 3, KD 10
  • Left: UB 40, UB 60
  • Both: Ling Gu, Da Bai, Yao Tong Xue

Initial Results

75% reduction in pain.

Treatment Course

Twice a week for one month

Follow-up Results

After the first month of treatment, he had stopped all pain medications and the treatment frequency was extended to once every two weeks, for maintenance. After the second month, the treatment frequency was further extended to once every three to four weeks. Under his doctor’s supervision, the patient reduced the dosage of his hypertension medication by half.
