Description

This workshop is open to anyone with a background in acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
It covers the history and development of qijing bamai, the eight extraordinary vessels and it presents an overview of various theories that have been put forward about them, various descriptions of their pathways, traditional and a variety of historical and modern uses of them. The eight extraordinary vessels represent a very deep primitive qi regulatory system in the human body that can produce strong treatment effects – Gaowu, author of the 1529 treatise Gathering of Eminent Acupuncturists said about them that it is like going hunting for a rabbit but using a net the size of the field to catch the rabbit, i.e. you always catch the rabbit.
The lecturer demonstrates a number of different Japanese treatment approaches that he has studied and uses in his practice. Since the literature about the qijing bamai is clinically and conceptually varied it is difficult to develop an understanding that is grounded in both historical sources and clinical practice.
Dr. Stephen Birch offers some speculative discussions of the possible biological nature and development of them. While literature about the uses of the qijing bamai was late developing in acupuncture-Chinese medicine, in the body they may well develop before the jingmai-meridian system to be replaced by it as the jingmai system develops. Together these two systems can be conceived as playing an important regulatory role in the body. To understand them, the author explores ideas about bio-regulation and basic physical properties of the body independent of anatomical details which might be how the qijing bamai express themselves.
